Lesene (Pilaster Strip)

Flat, vertical projection in the outer wall. Lesenes originally had a constructional significance, occurring in a places exposed to the forces of distraction, that is in the axes, in which on the inside of the room there are arches from the vaults. The layout of the lesenes and the rhythm of the room division on the bays usually is the same. Lesenes are characteristic of romanesque architecture.
