Narrow crossing in the church resulting from the extension of the aisles and leading them around the chancel behind the main altar. Ambulatory is separated from the chancel by walls or arcades. It appeared in the Middle Ages and was a characteristic component of romanesque and gothic churches. Ambit was often surrounded from the outside by the rim of the chapels.
